Linen Care

To fully utilise the exceptional qualities of linen and savor the durability and excellence of linen products, it is imperative to acquaint oneself with key techniques for maintaining linen items in optimal condition.

Washing

Linen can undergo various washing methods such as hand washing, machine washing, or dry cleaning. For white linen, bleaching washing agents are suitable, but when it comes to coloured linen, it is advisable to use gentle washing agents or mild soap to avoid damaging the fabric structure. Chlorite-based bleaching agents should be avoided as they can harm the fabric.

In the case of washing coloured linen in lime-water, it is recommended to add a softener, especially for darker items. It is important to never wash white and dark fabrics together to prevent colour transfer. When using a washing machine, avoid overloading it and allow the linen items to move freely to prevent striping. Additionally, if the linen fabric contains other materials, it is crucial to consider the characteristics of these materials when washing the items. Whether washing by hand or in a machine, thorough rinsing is essential.

Dry cleaning offers the advantage of carefully ironed items. It is recommended for curtains and roman blinds to avoid shrinkage. If any stains appear on the linen fabric, they can be treated with detergent. However, it is advisable to test the detergent on an inconspicuous part of the garment first. Allow the detergent to soak into the fabric for two to three minutes and then wash it. If the detergent does not cause any visible changes or color bleaching, it can be safely used for the garment. Under no circumstances should detergents be used directly in the washing machine.

Drying

Linen can be dried using either a machine or naturally. After washing, linen tends to become wrinkled, so it's crucial to hang the fabric properly after it has been washed and wrung out. Since linen dries quickly, it's important to avoid over-drying it, as excessively dried linen can be difficult to iron.

Ironing

The optimal method for ironing linen products is when they are slightly damp, as this makes ironing easier and eliminates the need for additional moisture. It is advisable to iron the fabric on the reverse side to protect it from excessive smoothing, shine, and colour fading. Utilise a hot iron setting with steam to remove creases effectively. After ironing, leave the linen items slightly damp and hang them in a cool, dry, and well-ventilated room to allow them to dry completely.
